Walking Houston
State of Architecture with Ziegler Cooper
A Video from Walking Houston 00:44
State of Architecture with Scott Ziegler. This had to be one of the most interesting interviews to date. Scott is head of the Urban Residential office at Ziegler Cooper Architects and the theme of our interview was High Density Development, A Sustainable Growth Strategy. Our round table discussion began with the history of our city dating back to the 1920s as well as Houston's challenges with urban sprawl.
Scott believes that these issues have lead to increased flooding, clearing of coveted natural resources, and infrastructure and services that require unnecessarily high sustainability costs. At the same time, rising land costs in the loop are creating the need for density. In order for developers to get land costs down in key areas of the city, they must build higher and more sustainable. But great architecture and urban design are more than tall buildings. "We're not just designing physical objects, we're also designing the spaces in-between physical objects. The connective tissue. That's what walkable urban living is all about." - Scott Ziegler
