Term of the Day: Lally Column
A Lally Column is a structural support column typically made of a steel pipe filled with concrete. It is commonly used in residential and commercial construction to provide support for beams and other load-bearing elements of a building.

Lally columns are named after John Lally, who invented and patented this type of column in the late 19th century. The concrete-filled steel pipe provides both compressive strength (due to the concrete) and resistance to buckling (thanks to the steel shell).
These columns are often used in basements or other areas where a strong, yet relatively small, support column is needed. They are usually installed vertically and can be adjustable or fixed in height. The main advantage of Lally columns is their ability to provide strong, durable support in a relatively compact and easy-to-install form.
